Paris 2026: An Unexpected and Delightful Interlude

Eiffel tower during the day

The Eiffel Tower by day.

Eiffel tower at night

And by night!

The last time I was in Paris I was 18 years old — a high school choir trip — I remember the super cool sneakers I wore and asking my friends to take disposable camera photos of me doing cartwheels in front of the Eiffel Tower.

I have just celebrated my 49th birthday in the same city — unexpected and delightful, a pleasant curve ball when so many curve balls are.not.awesome.

velvet and fringe touches to design

@labyrintheinteriors had a fun collection of velvets and fringe.

outdoor daybed design

@tucci.living has some pretty amazing day bed offerings that had me thinking about warmer temps.

What to say? First, merci beaucoup to Debbie, Steve, Suzanne, Frank and the entire Kravet crew for coordinating an amazing week, and to Jen, Donna and Geyer for the continued Chicago love. I’m thankful for industry partners that value relationships in addition to really beautiful fabric and quality furnishings  —  these folks really are the best. Darren, David and Nancy  — new designer friends  — I loved talking trade tales with you but mostly sharing life stories and really connecting  — I’m thankful. So many laughs, cocktails and delicious desserts amongst the beautiful things.

Kravet design friends

Made some really lovely new friends – @Kravet1918 curated a super group of folks.

dinner with Kravet crew

One of many fun dinners with the Kravet crew.

I spent a whirlwind morning with Business of Home. The Weitzner and Pollack women were SO inspiring   — true powerhouses of creative genius in textile design. Mind The Gap is a new-to-me brand out of Transylvania ( what?!)  — riotous color and pattern and I loved all of it.

discovering new brands

This brand was a delight to discover!

bold patterns and colors

Love that this brand isn’t afraid to go bold with pattern and color.

Holland and Sherry’s new Western Skies roll out was expertly done and Liberty of London created the most whimsical showroom with access to their archives. The work these folks do to showcase their product is so fun and inspiring to see. Thank you, Caitlin, for hoofing it through the damp Paris streets to connect us all.

liberty of london fabric

Archival pieces from Liberty of London! Dreamy!

Piece de resistance? Marché aux Puces de Saint Ouen, hands down. You can google it for more, but simply, it’s possibly the largest flea market in the world, full of everything and anything vintage or antique you can imagine. As a seasoned hunter, even I was OVERWHELMED. I sort of had to wander, dazed, through the alleys before I could even begin to think about what I would buy. There was definitely an impulse fabric purchase that I’m 99% sure I overpaid for but I got intimated/impressed by the French dame negotiating with me.

alleys filled with treasure

These alleys were filled with absolute treasure.

beautiful treasures

So much beauty to see!

Seriously, the volume and beauty of the product on display was amazing. I spent a little time with a dealer who was showcasing some truly pedigreed vintage items ( I wanted so many but don’t have my process sorted (yet) for shipping, etc.) and had to take a red wine and onion soup lunch break, so I didn’t second mortgage my house for her beauties.

I came away with an art collection I am SO EXCITED about  — watercolor, oil, big, small and everything in between  — some pedigreed artists and other gorgeous “undiscovered” pieces by who knows?

piles of artwork

I had to get creative to bring home some (ahem, a lot of) art. Heather was right, I should have brought an extra suitcase!

walls covered in paintings

It was hard to choose!

There was a gaggle of “cool” LA dudes doing some serious textile reconnaissance for their fashion brand. A pair of us ended up in the same art stall digging through bins of treasure for beauty for our walls  — we laughed about our process and shared the siren song of looking for something “good.”

treasure on tables

The hunt was part (all) of the fun.

treasure on tables

It was a delight meeting like-minded design people during the hunt.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder friends — let’s get after it!
