When you start working with a client, do you get flashes of inspiration – or what is the process of finding the defining inspiration behind a project?
Rachel: We like to start by really getting to know our clients – where have they traveled, what is the vibe of their home? From there we like to look at inspiration images together – and it doesn’t have to be a literal interpretation. It could even be a snapshot from a trip that captures a color they love. Also sometimes clue in to the fashion sensibility of a client – how much color and structure they dress with can help refine their story. Some of my best design kismet has started with a textile or piece of art that I come across that speaks to me about a project. It can serve as the jumping off point for a whole design.

Bryn: Additionally, clients sometimes come to us with a “touchstone” image they have come across. It might be from Pinterest, a friend’s home or a photo they took at a hotel. We will ask them what drew them to this particular image – the whole room? A piece of furniture? A rug?

Karen: Taking into account the stage of life our client is in is an important part of the process. How do they plan to live in the house now, in five years and down the road?

What does it look like to collaborate on inspiration with a builder or architect?
Bryn: We often share inspiration images with builders, architects and even trades on the job site. We may also have renderings that telegraph the client’s inspiration into their conceptual space.
Karen: Collaborating with the architect and builder is especially important at the early stages of the process to make sure clients’ lifestyle needs are accommodated.
Personally, what brings you inspiration in your design work?
Rachel: Traveling for me – it doesn't have to be exotic. I like the foliage in states I drive though that bring different colors and textures from what I'm used to. Recently in Louisville I was really inspired by the interiors of the Hotel Genevieve. The rooftop bar had these amazing pink marble tables. Even a trip to my very familiar home state of Minnesota usually brings me some inspo – the more regional way a menu is put together or the vibrant art scene of Minneapolis.
Bryn: I love a good old fashioned design book. I am more interested in design that stands the test of time. I love reading and viewing photos from designers past and present.

Karen: I get a lot of inspiration on a walk. I walk around my neighborhood every day, and I always take walks when we’re away, whether it’s for a sports tourney, visiting friends/family or a proper vacation. I’ve logged many miles just taking in nature, architecture and whatever comes across my path. (The other day, it was a mama possum with her baby on her back! Not sure if it was inspiring, but it was cute!)
