It’s fall y’all. Well nearly. Although fall technically begins at the autumnal equinox on September 22, 2025, the Labor Day weekend really feels like the start of it for many of us. The pools are closing, school is back in session, and we’ve entered the sweet spot of weather in Illinois, which means it’s time to take advantage of warm fall days and crisp nights with outdoor hangs. It also means fall decorating. Here are a few tips from our Two Hands Interiors team about how we approach fall decor. (For us, it’s typically less is more.)

Rachel: My go-to fall decorating tip is a walk outside – late August and September means the Illinois prairie natives are in full, gorgeous bloom. Grab yourself some kitchen shears and pick a bouquet – I'm partial to the mustard yellow, purple and brown of the season. I foraged all the florals for the above kitchen photo shoot on a September walk – the copper accents and earthy stoneware pots complete the autumn vibe.

Bryn: Fall decorating in my home is practical. It’s a warm wool blanket that works well for a football game or when my teenagers have their friends sitting around the fire pit. It’s a string light that transitions from summer to fall.

Karen: Fall decor is about little touches. It’s about blankets rolled up in baskets and layering in fall candles and fall foliage, flowers or even feathers.
Also because Halloween is really right around the corner, you might want to start planning your soiree. Bryn’s got you covered …
Bryn: In Glen Ellyn, Halloween is a big entertaining time for adults. So, if I were to invite people to my house for a fall party, I’d serve up chili or soup to friends while the kids trick-or-treat. (I hide in my house on Halloween hoping I don’t have to get up off my tired butt to answer the door. Haha.)
