A Well-Loved Kitchen gets a Classic Update

Western Springs Kitchen Before renovation
Western Springs Traditional Kitchen

This 20 year old kitchen had hosted more than its fair share of birthday parties, holiday gatherings and everyday family dinners. It had worked hard for this hard working family and was ready for a refresh. Well, more than a refresh, it was ready to start new again and comeback to life - all shiny and ready for the next 20 years of gatherings.

At our first meeting we were smitten with this lovely duo’s collection of vintage chinoiserie vases and dishes. We knew they could set the stage for a beautiful palette when refreshing these empty nesters’ long-time home.

Take special note of the TV in the corner. When we first met with this couple, keeping a TV in the kitchen was a point of discussion. Who doesn’t like to keep up with the game while cooking? Who needs a TV to entertain them while they are in the kitchen? Everyone ends up in the kitchen when we host, people should be able to watch a little bit while we chat? Why would we have people over to chat and turn a TV on? Can you hear the discussion? Have you had the discussion? Wonder if the new kitchen has a TV? We’ll come back to that.

We were also asked to revamp the powder room and freshen up the first floor with new paint and lighting.

From here, we got to work with our partners on planning how to re-work the layout and update the finishes and functional elements to allow for better flow and storage solutions.

We softened up the blues in the color palette to appeal to the potential buyers down the road while bringing in rich finishes including brass light fixtures, mesh accents and re-staining the floors a warm walnut.

We explored fabric options to find the right new custom window treatments that add a layer of polish to the updated space.

So, back to the TV. It was left out of the original plans. Her opinion prevailed but she secretly reach out to our construction partners to add the TV in a hidden cabinet as an anniversary gift. They worked some magic and integrated a hidden switch with a hidden door. The kitchen was installed, the TV was hidden in its secret cabinet and with a push of a button, the cabinet opened to reveal a few more thoughts - “What did you? How did you? How cool is that?! Thank you, my dear!” Such a sweet gift and such a sweet duo.
