A STUDY IN BLUE

Project

Designed for everyday living with an elevated point of view, this home pairs a soft, livable palette with moments of saturated color, rich materials and unexpected detail. Shades of blue move throughout the spaces, layered with warm woods, natural textures, brass accents and a mix of tailored and playful furnishings. In the kitchen, warm neutral cabinetry and a deep blue island create a timeless foundation, while a newly carved-out bar adds a more dramatic note with walnut cabinetry, Arizona quartzite and custom brass-and-glass shelving. Throughout the home, art, patterned textiles, collected objects and sculptural lighting keep the spaces polished but approachable.

Inspiration

The design grew from a desire to make the home feel lighter, brighter and more current without losing the warmth and familiarity that made it theirs. A restrained palette of blues, warm neutrals and natural materials creates continuity from room to room, while moments of richer color and pattern keep things from feeling too predictable. The bar became a particular opportunity to turn function into something special: inspired by the homeowners’ love of cooking, coffee and cocktails, the former family room bookshelf was replaced with a true mixologist’s station, complete with a bar sink, undercounter refrigeration, custom bistro shelving and a slab of Arizona quartzite that became the room’s star.

Client

These lovely empty nesters came to us from a referral from a friend of ours. After living in the home for more than twenty years and raising their children (now college graduates), these clients wanted an update that felt fresh and elevated while still feeling like them. Cooking, coffee and cocktails are central to family life, so the design needed to support the way they actually live while making room for a little more beauty and personality. The result is a home that feels collected rather than overly designed — comfortable enough for everyday life, with thoughtful details and a few unexpected moments that make it distinctly their own.
